The Road Beneath Our Feet

Plaster cast of an ancient victim of the Vesuvius eruption. Pompeii – 1972
Pompeii
Embalmed in molten ash, a man reclines,
a handsome man
with slender arms and wide-set eyes.
Has he drunk his glass of wine
or is he about to drink?
And does it matter now, the things undone?
A carpet of fine-grained ash supports him,
a jagged wall of rock behind,
where two leaves spring.
