Fauxlaroid Fun

By
Dan Murano

My first cellphone was an Iphone 4s. At first I thought of its camera as little more than a recording device. That is, until I began exploring photo apps.

Shakeitphoto!

It wasn't long before I found a favorite app: Shakeitphoto!

Shakeit makes Polaroid-style images, complete with the classic white frame, SX-70 sound and slow developing effect. It turned the straightforward camera in my phone into a fun novelty.

I only had a few digital cameras at the time and even the tiniest ones had viewfinders. I don't enjoy composing on a screen at arm’s length from my face. Doing that also makes it tough to go unnoticed when photographing out on the street.

With practice, I learned to point the lens without seeing the screen. Often the framing was off, but even so, I usually ended up with interesting shots.

Most of these Fauxlaroids were framed using the screen. Street photos, which I'll show in another post, were often made by just pointing the phone towards what I wanted to capture. I'll show street shots in future posts.

This guy! Reminds me of T.S. Eliot's "The Naming of Cats," which is SO much fun to read out loud, especially in a British Accent!
