Lives Lost - Lives Remembered

By

1 December 2023

December 1, 2023 marks the 36th World's AIDS Day observance.

These photos of the AIDS Quilt were made over several years when the it was displayed on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Each Quilt panel commemorates a life lost to HIV-AIDS. It's hard to imagine the power of these individual memorials displayed in one place.

These photos display the work of volunteers who carefully laid out each segment of multiple panels, as well as those who came to view and remember the many lives lost to HIV/AIDS. Also included are images of commemoration vigils during those years. The Quilt eventually became too large to display in its entirety.

I love how you can click on the photo to view the collection of AIDS quilt photos. I always get the chills looking at the panels. Art giving proof of someones spirit and existence. The overall shots, especially where people are placing the last quilt in it's space -- absolutely stunning.
