Rome's giant flea market.
Porta Portese
Every Sunday in Rome, locals and tourists converge on the Trastevere (across the Tiber) neighborhood to visit the flea market known as Porta Portese, named after the rebuilt ancient city gate beside which it takes place.
Thousands of visitors stream though the two kilometer strip of stalls in search of bargains on clothing, books, electronics, antiques and collectables, furniture, rugs, food and pretty much anything else seen hanging or piled high on tables or in bins. No doubt claustrophobics would feel choked by the repeating crowd surges during their passing through the narrow street. Two friends who I had recently met, Mark and Francesca, introduced me to the market and the fun of haggling for bargains here, though what I enjoyed most was Porta Portese's myriad of faces and swiftly shifting scenes.
